The idea
“We are the secret architects of the forest,” whispered Fräulein Pilz, “without us the trees could not grow so strong and so tall.”
Fungi, enigmatic beings, have existed for more than 400 million years and their kingdom is vast and diverse. According to a legend, it was the fungi that whispered knowledge to human beings. From tiny mould to majestic mushrooms, they are fundamental to life on Earth, because they break down organic matter and nourish the soil. Mycorrhiza, the symbiotic relationship between fungi and plant roots, allows trees to communicate and share nutrients.
